History and culture at every turn

The area around Sesto/Sexten is not only a very special world of experience for nature lovers, even those interested in culture will get their money’s worth here. In the open-air museum in the area of Anderter Alpe on the Croda Rossa/Rotwand, where the battles raged, history enthusiasts can walk in the footsteps of the First World War. The permanent exhibition “Never forget. The First World War in the Sesto/Sexten Dolomites 1915-1918” in the village centre vividly exposes this dark chapter of history. The collegiate church in San Candido/Innichen dates back even further to the 13th century and is the largest religious building in South Tyrol. In the crypt, the frescoes by the famous Tyrolean artist Michael Pacher captivate the viewer. Other places of interest in San Candido/Innichen are the Franciscan monastery and the DoloMythos, a museum dedicated to the geology and history of the Dolomites.

City, country, lake – additional sights

When you spend your holiday at our hotel in Sesto/Sexten, then we recommend you to make a detour to Brunico/Bruneck. The medieval town is only 40 kilometres from the Hotel St. Veit. In addition to numerous sights, such as the Brunico/Bruneck Castle with the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa, you will also find numerous places to shop. The Braies/Pragser lake is considered a true gem in the Dolomites. The crystal-clear water reflects the silhouette of the surrounding mountains and forests. A sight you will remember forever. Speaking of water: In Villabassa/Niederdorf, there is an idyllic “Kneipp für mich®-Aktivpark”.  Thanks to the Mobilcard, you can use all public transport in South Tyrol for 1, 3, or 7 days – without restriction.

Holidays in Sesto/Sexten and its surroundings: music and more

Gustav Mahler was inspired by the energy of the mountains and, during the summer months of 1908 to 1910, withdrew to his composer’s cottage near Dobbiaco/Toblach. A short hike leads from Dobbiaco/Toblach to Mahler’s retreat. Today, the Gustav Mahler Weeks in July pay tribute to the great composer. In addition to an extensive musical programme, academic events are also offered as part of the Music Weeks. Another highlight of the year is the Südtiroler Festspiele in September in Dobbiaco/Toblach, where numerous conductors and orchestras of distinction perform. Since 1998, the Alta Pusteria International Choir Festival has taken placeevery year in June.
